DTM: Robert Wickens wins round seven at the Nürburgring
Right when the starting lights were switched off, rain set in at the Nürburgring and turned round seven of the DTM into a tire gamble in which Robert Wickens hit the jackpot during the 47 race laps to celebrate his first DTM victory. On crossing the finish line, the Mercedes-Benz driver had a 2.158-second advantage over Augusto Farfus (BMW), who had started from pole. Third place went to Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz), who was surprisingly trailed by Mike Rockenfeller in fourth. The Audi driver made up many places by switching to rain tires at a particularly early point in time and thus extended his lead of the standings. At what was the home round for him and his Team Audi Sport Phoenix, ‘Rocky’ had only started from position eleven on the grid.
The previous title candidates, Bruno Spengler (BMW) and Gary Paffett (Mercedes-Benz), scored no points. All three of the premium manufacturers involved in the DTM, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, rely on clutch high-tech from ZF Friedrichshafen AG.
